VyprVPN Review: A Real ‘No Logs’ Policy?
Since the earliest days of the internet, Golden Frog has been fighting for online privacy. VyprVPN is their leading VPN service, with millions of users trusting it for online security.
With 70 countries to choose from and 200,000 IP addresses available, they claim to offer a “fast and reliable” VPN connection for all devices, at an affordable price.
Desperate to see how it compares to our other VPN reviews, we downloaded their free trial and started putting it to work!
VyprVPN is one of just a few VPNs to offer absolute proof of their no logs policy. They hired an independent firm to complete an analysis of their company’s no logs policy.
The result? Confirmation that they won’t have any information or logs to hand over to the government if they demand it.
Thanks to the unique ‘Chameleon protocol,’ you can overcome VPN blocking in countries like China and Russia.
The technology, which is only offered in the premium pack, scrambles your metadata and could be a genuine lifesaver for those in need.
All of the 700+ servers are owned only by VyprVPN. There is no risk of third-party involvement or the sale of your data.
Popular mobile and computer devices have dedicated VPN apps which are very easy to use, even for new VPN users. The apps allow for quick and instant server selection and connection and complex customization.
With their self owned and maintained servers, this service provides reliable speeds and connections that will rarely, if ever, drop.
For anyone wanting total anonymity, they’ll be disappointed to learn that there isn’t a cryptocurrency payment option.
Our tests proved that this service might not work with all Netflix regions
Their online account management is designed so that it’s hard to cancel your subscriptions. We also found that their login page didn’t even exist when we tried to use it.
Many users have reported that they recieved account cancellations and suspensions after torrenting.
This goes against certain statements made on their website, which leads to confusion over the torrenting policy.
Speed and Reliability
Speed Results Without a VPN
First, we set up a speed test on our internet connection without a VPN to compare the speeds. On average, our downloads speeds were between 5-10 Mbps. For this test, we used a 4G connection from Europe.
Speed Results with VyprVPN from Europe
Following that, we pressed the connect button on the app, using various locations and carried out some speed tests.
From Germany, our download speed was 6.76 Mbps.
From Sweden, our download speed was 5.05 Mbps.
From the United Kingdom, our download speed was 6.42 Mbps.
The industry average for short-distance VPN connections is 10-30% speed losses. During our VyprVPN review, it didn’t reach close to our non-VPN peak, but it had a great consistency without severe loss.
Speed Results from the U.S.
From Chicago, our download speed results were 4.95 Mbps
From Los Angeles, our download speeds were 2.47 Mbps
The industry average for Europe - U.S. long-distance VPN connections is around 30-50% speed losses.
This service didn’t impress us for Europe - U.S. connections.
Speed Results from Asia
Our download speed tests for Hong Kong were 5.19 Mbps.
Our download speed results from Singapore were 3.66 Mbps.
For Europe - Asia long-distance connections, the industry average is around 30-70% speed losses. In that respect, VyprVPN performed about average.
Is It Fast?
As usual, this virtual private network claims to offer the fastest download speeds in the world. Sadly, we don’t think that’s true.
That doesn’t mean it’s slow though; it’s just not the best. One of its distinctive qualities is its consistency. That’s the sign of a reliable and healthy loading balance.
When you’re streaming, the last thing you want is unreliable speeds, and this VPN shouldn't let you down with its losses.
How Reliable Is It?
Golden Frog has its own servers located across the world. 700 of them.
From browsing online reviews and expert opinions, it’s fair to say this is one of the more reliable options on the market. It will very, very rarely drop its connections.
Is It Safe?
VyprVPN is extremely safe. They have been audited to prove they have No Logs and are located in Switzerland, which is very much in favor of privacy and data protection.
Our only concerns come for users who want total security. Although VyprVPN is Swiss, their owners are Americans and based in the US, so they could potentially need to hand over user data to the U.S. government under the Patriot Act and FISA regulations.
That leaves us with some doubt over just how far they can go in securing users in need of extreme protection.
The service boasts a strong selection of encryption, including PPTP, OpenVPN, L2TP/IPSec and Chameleon.
In our opinion, you should opt for OpenVPN and Chameleon as they’re far more secure.
As well as being very fast, they also use AES-256 cipher for data authentication. Chameleon can also mask VPN traffic and overcome deep packet inspections.
No IPV4, IPV6, WebRTC, and DNS Leaks
We carried out some crucial tests for leaks. We didn’t encounter any DNS leaks as expected for a service with such experience.
But we do always suggest that you complete your own online tests, to ensure no changes have occurred since our review.
Golden Frog also developed VyprDNS, which is available only for VyprVPN customers.
Sadly, while most of their competitors can offer 24/7 customer support and live chat, VyprVPN cannot.
However, there is a “Submit Request” button, where you can fill out a form for your inquiry. They claim to reply “as soon as possible.”
There is a handy feature within their submit form, where threads with relevant answers are suggested while you type your question.
We found that it can help solve some basic misunderstandings without delay. There is a plethora of information on their site, should you have any problems and can’t wait for a reply.
The Facebook chat doesn’t qualify as a ‘live chat,’ as they don’t reply fast.
Compatibility and Apps
There are dedicated apps for Windows, Mac, Android, iOS and Routers.
The service supports a variety of popular devices and operating systems:
During our review, we discovered that it has slick and easy-to-use apps with rapid installation and small file size.
The design is straightforward to use and up there with the best providers. Anyone new to VPNs will find it easy to navigate, connect and learn detailed information about their connection.
We love the simple to use “Search” feature which means you can search for any city in the world before selection (providing, of course, that city has a server).
All the key information is displayed within the main hub of the app, such as IP address, connection time, encryption details and NAT firewall information.
The download and upload speeds of recent activity are displayed in a very simple, color-coded graph.
Easy Setup Process
We found this to be one of the simplest and easiest VPNs to set up. Within 5 minutes, we had signed up, paid, downloaded the file, installed it and connected to a server.
For anyone left frustrated by complex installations and technical information, fear not, this is a breeze!
You can see in the screenshot below the very clean and easy to understand Windows app.
Android and iOS Apps
Both the Android and iOS apps are even tidier than the Windows client.
The apps change color from white to black when using a VPN connection, which is very helpful for quickly checking if you’re still connected.
The main screen shows your selected location and IP address, as well as access to a kill switch (on Android only), malicious site blocking and more. There is also DNS settings and split-tunneling.
The iOS app doesn’t feature the kill switch or OpenVPN. It’s still a handy app, but we would only suggest the iOS app for casual use and not for anyone in need of maximum security levels.
Settings and Customization
Like most of the very best VPN services, this one offers a wide range of advanced settings. All the essential bases are covered, such as start-up and notification options. .
As well as more complex settings such as encryption and OpenVPN settings.
If you’re looking for a kill switch or DNS and IPV6 leak configurations, then rest assured, they won’t let you down.
Locations and Servers
They have over 700 servers in North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania. Although this doesn’t compare to the 5000+ servers NordVPN has, it is a strong number that focuses on quality and reliability. They also have 200,000 IP addresses.
No Third Parties for Reliable Security
One of the stand-out features of VyprVPN is that their servers are ALL owned and maintained by Golden Frog only, so there is no chance of third-party involvement!
This is essential for any user that need secure privacy. It all means you’ll avoid third-party logging and irritatingly long lists when trying to connect too.
There is also a very useful kill switch, for if your connection ever fails and you want to avoid the risk of having your information compromised.
Is VyprVPN Good for Torrenting?
When it comes to torrenting with VPNS you need, speed, security and bandwidth that won’t get throttled. Thankfully, they can offer you all three of those areas.
Although they don’t advertise torrenting purposes, they did release a statement on the matter proving it is possible:
"At Golden Frog, we have the utmost respect for your privacy. We do not monitor the content of your internet traffic through our servers or block the use of any ports. Because our service treats all traffic equally, peer-to-peer and torrent traffic is allowed."
However, if you read customer reviews and complaints, then you’ll discover concerns over copyright infringements and account suspensions.
So although torrenting seems certainly possible, there are question marks over how far you can push it.
Is It Good for Netflix?
VPNs these days are always boasting about their geoblocking abilities. If you want to watch Netflix shows or movies from another country, then you’ll need a VPN that can bypass Netflix’s powerful geoblocking security.
During our review, we managed to get in through the UK servers. The US and other territories proved more difficult with geo blocking errors appearing. We doubt its reliability for Netflix, and the results may change at any time as Netflix up’s their game.
Does VyprVPN Work in China and Other Censored Countries?
As we were unable to travel to China to carry out the tests ourselves, we dug deep into online reviews. The conclusion - YES it works in China, but only when you use the Chameleon encryption.
VyprVPN will be able to overcome internet throttling, VPN blocks and firewalls. Chameleon uses the unmodified OpenVPN 256-bit protocol and deep packet inspection. In theory, this means your speeds won't get throttled and you'll be able to use it without any problems in China.
A Quick Guide to Turning on Chameleon:
Go to settings, then the ‘Protocol’ tab and select “Chameleon.” If you don’t have immediate luck, then try using another server. We advise that you download VyprVPN before arrival in China, as you won’t be able to download it there easily.
Where Is VyprVPN from (Jurisdiction)?
Vypr is owned by Golden Frog GmbH, which is based in Meggen, Switzerland. That means all the data and users are placed under Swiss privacy and data protection laws.
Switzerland has an excellent reputation for its privacy protection. Switzerland is not a member of the EU or a member of the so-called “5 Eyes” or “14 Eyes” surveillance alliances.
Owners Ron and Carolyn Yokubaitis are from Texas, USA and chose Switzerland as the company’s base because of its laws. The VPN service was created following the “Room 641a scandal” when the NSA accessed AT&T’s network for mass surveillance.
‘No Logs’ Policy
VyprVPN is a strictly ‘No Logs’ company. Many other VPN services claim to be ‘No Log,’ but that’s often a marketing trick. Vypr, however, is legit. They hired an independent firm (Leviathan) to carry out a full audit.
They passed and have evidence of their assessment on their website. That means if a government comes knocking at their door, they won’t have any data about you to share.
This service provides a “Kill Switch,” which ensures your connections are encrypted even when the connection drops.
It will make sure that your real IP is hidden and never given away to the sites you’re using. If you need privacy, it’s an essential feature.
Block Malicious Sites
This feature protects you from sites that could be potentially dangerous. They have a blacklist, but there is the option to proceed anyway if you wish to.
The mobile applications have a ‘connection per app’ feature, which allows you to use select apps which you want the VPN always to use, and select others to bypass it.
Pricing and Discounts
This virtual private network has two pricing methods and an option for a ‘Premium’ subscription.
Premium features 5 devices, Chameleon Protocol and the VyprVPN Cloud. While the standard only features 3 devices.
£32.63 for the first year and £43.50 each year after. This works out at £2.72 per month for the first year.
£6.90 per month, when not an annual subscription.
£43.13 for the first year and £57.50 each year after. This works out at £3.59 per month for the first year.
£9.25 per month, when not an annual subscription.
Through their website, you can quickly pay with PayPal or a credit or debit card.
There is a free trial available for 3-days. If you don’t cancel your subscription before the end of the third day, you will be charged.
When we tried to cancel our trial, we were left hugely frustrated by the process. Their login page via the website simply didn’t load. We had to access it via the app, and when we did, it was hard to find the cancellation button.
It can be found in the “account” section, under “Cancel service.”
Our Final Verdict: Is VyprVPN Worth It?
We’ve finished our VyprVPN review, and we have to say, yes.
The level of security VyprVPN offers, with an audited ‘No Logs’ promise is very reassuring for anyone in need of total privacy.
The Chameleon encryption makes it a robust service for getting past bandwidth throttling in countries such as China, and also ensures your information stays safe at all times.
It’s one of the most secure VPNs we have ever reviewed, and the only criticism falls at speed. There are certainly faster virtual private networks than this, but it’s a fair compromise for the levels of security.
The speeds are still more than quick enough for downloads, streaming and fast browsing.
The pricing is extremely affordable, and we’d recommend it among consideration for journalists, political activists and anyone who wants to retain their privacy online.
